Choose a mod or a modpack
A mod adds or changes individual features. A modpack brings together a set of mods and their configuration. Start on the projects page and follow the project’s official download link.
Check compatibility
Before installing, check the release listing for:
- The required Minecraft version.
- The mod loader and its version.
- Any required dependencies.
- Whether the download is a standalone mod or a complete modpack.
Use the instructions attached to the release you actually download. Requirements can change between releases.
Make a separate instance
Create a dedicated instance in your launcher rather than mixing a new project into an existing installation. Give it a recognizable name so you can find it again.
For a modpack, use the install or import option supported by its official distribution platform. For a standalone mod, follow the loader and dependency instructions from its release page.
Back up your worlds
Close the game and copy any existing world you intend to use before changing its mods or Minecraft version. Keep that backup outside the instance you are updating.
Test the installation
Launch the instance and check that it reaches the main menu before opening an existing world. A new test world is a useful place to check the installation.
